EDWARD SHARPE, LE DIVE CRACKDOWN, MOMA SPEED RUN, SOUR FRUIT
Will the next internet circle jerk be to a Mumford & Son's adjacent vibe?
Good evening everyone.
Bear with me on this one at the beginning. Little bit of an annoying one.
Countless reposts with millions of views of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zero’s Tiny Desk got me thinking…
Has enough time passed for the “world” to start fetishizing hoo-rah *boom boom clap* Mumford & Sons vibes? (Threw up in my mouth writing that)
We’ve already seen the digital circle jerk to bedazzled Pink Razr phones and party photography via Y2K and indie sl***e. Could the next wave be people thinking that a 14 person indie folk band from 2010 wearing stinky white linen garments was the pinnacle of #chillness?
I think it’s possible. The comment sections on these Edward Sharpe reposts are split—half are glazing this “Into The Wild” era, half are refusing to be gaslit into thinking it wasn’t always terrible. The exact balance you need for prolonged internet discourse.
I guess arguing with strangers on the internet if a band that featured a lot of tambourine was “cool” is more enjoyable than watching another video of Elon Musk being an autistic loser.
Much of the music from this era makes me feel a little happy, a little sad but definitely #hopeful. Listening to Mk.gee, Cameron Winter, and MJ Lenderman lend that same feeling but without a direct line to man bun, IPA and leather satchel culture.
The 15/20-year trend cycle is nostalgia with a short attention span. Enough time passes, and the cringe gets scrubbed away or embraced, leaving behind the “vibe” or whatever “core” highsnobiety will end up calling this. People start to romanticize the sepia filters and forget the lame fanboys in Portland that made people move on from songs like this.
Lastly, the people who “came of age” during this era now have pull in the world of media and marketing so it’s their time to force-feed their formative years to the masses (not too dissimilar to this insufferable rant)
That’s it on that. I’m sure there’s a ton of missing “cultural context” but the descent into think pieces is a steep and slippery one so we’ll stop there. On to more important things….
CRACKDOWN AT LE DIVE
There was a city council vote on Le Dive’s permit for their outdoor bistro tables yesterday. They lost and are not permitted to have those 20 little red tables on their sidewalk anymore. Absolutely terrible news for members of the Association of Performative Public Journaling.
The remainder of the permitting for the street seating is apparently being put to a vote soon. I understand residents not wanting their streets to feel like a playground for the underemployed but when you remove the annoyance of all things Dimes Squ*re it’s an objectively nice place to eat, drink and “feel apart of something” (Even if it also triggers a fight or flight response to the central nervous system)
In a world where many egos rely on being able to feel like the main character in their own low budget film… not being able have a spritz or a miller high life at 6:30pm on a Friday here will be a HUGE blow.
MoMA SPEEDRUN
This video popped up on my for you page and it spoke to me more than anything that’s actually showing at the MoMa.
It’s a video to promote a website that shows a full 17 minute speed run of the entire museum. Awesome stuff. Watch it here. Beautiful Modern Warfare 2 graphics. I think we’ll see brands emulate this style of video over the next year or two.
As a recovering Nerd’s Gummy Clusters addict, these are the best things in the entire world.
CAUTION: FOR REAL SOUR ENJOYERS ONLY.
I’ve been 8 months clean off gummy clusters and have transitioned to Fruit Riot as an alternative the last few months.
There may be slightly too much citric acid on these mf’s but when we talk about innovation in the world of snacks… this is what it should look like. Really special stuff going on here and the pro move is to eat them with chopsticks. Their grape and pineapple flavors are equally delicious. #notanad
Alright… that’s it. I’m going to do an awesome listicle next week.
"apart" means separate btw
We had the grape
Dying to try the mango
